The Dynamo sports society put a hockey team on the ice in Kyiv in 1963, and for its first decade it carried the Dynamo name before the club was renamed Sokil for its tenth anniversary in 1973 — Falcon, in white and blue with red added that year for the Kyiv coat of arms. Through the Soviet years the club never broke into the Top League's upper reaches, finishing third in 1984–85 and losing the Spengler Cup final in 1986.
Ukrainian independence turned Sokil from a mid-table Soviet side into the country's dominant club. It has taken the national championship fifteen times, with an Eastern European Hockey League double in 1997–98 and 1998–99 and a Ukrainian Cup in 2007 along the way. None of it came without interruption: financial collapse forced the club out of competition entirely between 2014 and 2020.
The Kyiv derby against Kryzhynka-Kyiv Capitals is now the fixture that draws the city's attention, though Sokil has not always been able to play it at home — the Kyiv Palace of Sports, built for 6,800, has recently gone unavailable, sending the club to the smaller ATEK Sports Complex instead. The Palace remains the address on the club crest.
