Zemgale Jelgava

The Jelgava Ice Hall seats 2,360, but it is the only sheet of ice Zemgale has ever known as home.

Founded in 2002 as ASK Zemgale, the senior side withdrew from the top flight after the 2004/05 season, and did not return until 2010, by then playing as JLSS Zemgale. Later spells under HK Zemgale/LLU and HK Zemgale/LBTU tracked partnerships with local institutions rather than any change of ground or colours; blue, red and white, Jelgava's own colours, stayed constant throughout.

The club's breakthrough came in 2022, when it won the Latvian Hockey League title for the first time, ending a run of near-misses that included bronze finishes in 2012/13, 2016/17 and 2018/19 and runner-up finishes either side of that championship, most recently in 2025. A year before the title, in 2022/23, Zemgale had already made a different kind of history, becoming the first Latvian club to enter the Finnish Mestis league, where it finished 12th of fourteen teams with Artūrs Homjakovs and Rihards Bernhards its leading scorers.

Domestically the fixture that sharpens attention is the derby against HK Liepāja, and Zemgale also meets HK Ogre in what is known locally as the Semigallia derby, a reminder that the club's roots lie in this one region of Latvia rather than the capital. Those roots trace back to a single ice hall in Jelgava that has outlasted every name the club has carried.
