The Challenger Cup Women was a global volleyball tournament established by the International Volleyball Federation in 2018. It operated as the secondary tier for women's national teams, positioned directly below the elite Volleyball Nations League. The competition ran for seven seasons before being discontinued after its 2024 edition. Its primary function was to determine promotion to the top-flight VNL.
Under the original system, the winner of the Challenger Cup replaced the lowest-ranked "challenger" team from the previous VNL season. The format evolved over time. The inaugural 2018 event used a round-robin group stage followed by knockout matches. Later editions expanded to eight teams in a straight knockout tournament. The 2024 edition took place in Manila, Philippines.
The Czech Republic emerged as the final champion. They defeated Argentina Women and UPCN during the last tournament. Other winners included Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, and France. The tournament stood apart from continental challenger cups, which served as qualifiers for this global event. It replaced the FIVB World Grand Prix as the secondary tier but created a separate promotion pathway.
Changes to the VNL structure affected the Cup's role. In 2025, the VNL expanded to 18 teams, abolishing the core/challenger distinction. Consequently, the Challenger Cup winner was promoted alongside the highest-ranked non-participating team. The last-placed VNL team faced relegation. This shift marked the end of the previous promotion model.
The competition provided a clear route for nations to reach the top level. Teams competed annually for the right to join the VNL. The final edition confirmed the Czech Republic's status as the current champion. The tournament has now ceased to exist following these structural changes.
