Al-Anwar secured a surprising 2-0 victory over Al-Taee in the first division league on Tuesday evening. The hosts, sitting 14th with two points from three games, took the lead when R. Bensayah scored in the third minute. Al-Taee arrived in fourth place with six points and a stronger recent record, but could not convert their possession advantage into a result.
Bensayah's early goal set the tone for the match. Al-Anwar kept knocking on the door with six shots on target compared to their opponents' three, though only one found the net. The hosts had 49 per cent possession and four corners, while the visitors controlled slightly more of the ball with 51 per cent possession and also won four corners.
The match grew more complicated around the hour mark. Bruno Bezerra came on for Al-Anwar in the 72nd minute as the hosts looked to hold their advantage. Al-Taee responded with a substitution of H. Al Habib, but the momentum had already shifted. Five yellow cards were shown to the visitors compared to one for the hosts, reflecting the growing tension.
The turning point arrived in the 82nd minute. M. Al Harthi received a red card for Al-Taee, and moments later a R. Bensayah goal was cancelled by VAR, denying the visitors a potential equaliser. That double blow left the away side with ten men and no way back into the contest.
R. Al Salem added a second goal for Al-Anwar in the 88th minute, confirming the result. The hosts finished with 91 attacks against 86 for the visitors, but the quality of chances told a different story. Al-Anwar's shot accuracy of 0.67 contrasted sharply with Al-Taee's 0.38.
The result means Al-Anwar move off the bottom of the table with their first win of the season. Al-Taee remain fourth but drop further behind the leaders after a setback. The visitors had won two of their previous three matches, including a 2-1 victory over Al-Jandal, but this afternoon the game was decided in three moments rather than 90 minutes of possession.
