Mamelodi Sundowns beat Marumo Gallants 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening in the opening round of the Premier Soccer League. Khoza opened the scoring in the twenty-first minute before Mailula doubled the advantage after the hour mark. The hosts move up to second place in the table with thirteen points from five games.
First-half dominance
And here's the thing — Sundowns didn't need to create a single big chance to win. They had seven shots on target and eight wide, while Gallants could only manage four on goal. The visitors lost possession early and by then had settled into a defensive shape they couldn't break. Khoza's goal came from sustained pressure, though the big chances column stays stubbornly empty.
To be fair, Gallants weren't entirely passive. They made six corners and attempted twenty-one crosses, but only four landed. Sundowns kept seventeen tackles and nine interceptions to contain any attack. The visitors' goalkeeper saved five times, which tells you something about the volume of work he faced.
Second-half adjustments
Mailula's goal in the sixty-eighth minute was the moment the game truly closed. Sundowns had already gone ahead 1-0, but this strike removed any doubt. By then, Gallants had made two substitutions and were second to everything in midfield. Mailula himself was taken off in the seventy-seventh minute, having done enough to secure three points.
The statistics don't tell the full story, but they confirm the pattern. Sundowns completed 733 passes against 214 for the visitors. They played 139 passes into the final third while Gallants managed 41. The possession figure of 74 per cent wasn't surprising if you watched the match.
There were plenty of changes on both sides. Sundowns brought on Mudau, Matthews, Basadien and Mokoena, while Gallants tried Ndlovu, Mabuza and Otladisa. The replacements couldn't shift the momentum, which had been set in the opening half-hour.
What it means
Sundowns sit second with four wins and a draw. They've been consistent, with results against Kaizer Chiefs and Tshakhuma Tshani among their recent form. Gallants remain fifteenth with only two points from five matches and haven't won a single game this season.
The result extends Sundowns' unbeaten run and highlights the gap between the top of the table and the bottom. Gallants need to find a way to create something from nothing if they want to climb out of the relegation zone. Sundowns, meanwhile, have hit their stride and will be looking to build on this foundation.
