Varteks Beat Rudeš 2-0 in HNL Regular Season
Varteks and Rudeš met at Varteks Stadium on 29 August in the fifth round of the HNL regular season. The hosts took a 2-0 win, with A. Latkovic and I. Canjuga finding the net in the second half. To be fair, the match turned on a penalty decision that never materialised into a goal. Varteks moved to the top of the table with 12 points after five games, while Rudeš remained in ninth place on 3 points.
The first half passed without incident until Xavier Fernandes picked up a yellow card in the 36th minute. Rudeš came out after the break with a change, bringing on G. Sikosek in the 46th minute. By then Varteks had already begun to press, and the pressure came to a head in the 60th minute when VAR awarded a penalty to Novak Tepšić. Ivan Mamut stepped up but missed, sending his effort wide in the 64th minute.
And here's the thing about that miss — it changed the mood of the game. Varteks were caught in possession for a moment, but recovered quickly. A. Latkovic found a way through in the 72nd minute, finishing from inside the box. Rudeš refused to go away, throwing bodies into the attack, but the pitch cut up badly and their shape began to fracture.
I. Canjuga doubled the lead in the 84th minute, capitalising on a moment of space. Kristijan Lovrić went close to adding another booking for Rudeš with a yellow card in the 87th minute. Vartechs made several changes to see out the game, bringing on I. Mamut and L. Ilecic in the closing stages. The hosts sat deep and soaked it up after the second goal.
What the numbers tell you is straightforward. Varteks enjoyed 56 per cent possession and launched 123 attacks compared to Rudeš's 101. They took nine shots to the visitors' three, though only three found the target each. Big chances created favoured the home side 2-1, and Varteks won 15 of 22 aerial duels. Shots accuracy hovered around 27 per cent for the hosts, meaning chances went begging.
The result keeps Varteks clear at the summit of the table. They have won four of five games, with only a 1-3 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on 22 August breaking their run. Rudeš have struggled, losing four of their five matches and scoring just three goals all season. The gap between them at 9 points feels wider than the table suggests.
