Dungannon Swifts claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portadown in the second round of the Premiership. K. Lowe's early strike proved decisive as the visitors took all three points to their advantage. The result leaves Portadown winless at the bottom while Swifts consolidate their position near the summit.
The decisive moment arrived in the fourteenth minute when Lowe found the net to give his side the lead. From that point onwards, Dungannon Swifts controlled proceedings with greater composure. The hosts made several changes in an attempt to get back into the contest, bringing on F. Flanagan in the fifty-first minute.
Portadown pushed for an equaliser and introduced two more players in the sixty-fourth minute through S. Gordon and A. Mitchell. The visitors responded by bringing on D. Dos Santos Martins and B. Altintop in the seventieth minute, looking to see out the game professionally. The yellow cards began to accumulate as tensions rose, with four shown to Portadown players in the eighty-fourth minute alone.
Statistics tell a story of dominance without conversion. Dungannon Swifts registered eight shots on target compared to just two for Portadown, yet could only add one goal to their tally. The visitors also enjoyed 53 per cent possession and created more attacks overall. It was a match where the better side took their chance and the hosts ran out of legs.
The result means Dungannon Swifts now sit second in the table with twelve points from five games. They have won four of their five outings so far and look strong contenders. Portadown remain rooted to the bottom with zero points, their winless run extending to five matches without relief.
