Viking came into the fixture as the better side on paper, sitting in second place with 43 points, while Sandefjord languished in 12th with 19. We had backed the visitors for victory with 49 per cent confidence, but the match took a different shape.
The turning point came early, or at least what felt like it. Peter Christiansen thought he had given Viking the lead in the 23rd minute, only for the goal to be cancelled by VAR. That must have stung. Viking pressed on, but Sandefjord dug in and held firm until the break, when three changes came for the hosts.
Jesper Daland's red card in the 48th minute shifted the balance entirely. Viking had the penalty in the 65th minute through Zlatko Tripić, but he missed. That was the moment the game flipped. Tobias Borkeeiet equalised for Sandefjord in the 60th minute, and Henrik Bjørdal's late strike in 90+4 minutes ensured the points were shared.
The statistics tell a story of wasted opportunity. Sandefjord had 54 per cent possession but managed just one shot on target from six attempts inside the box. Viking dominated the other way around with four shots on target and 14 key passes, yet could find no answer once Daland was sent off.
For Sandefjord, the point keeps them in the lower half, still nine defeats deep after 18 games. For Viking, it halts their momentum after five straight wins. The draw brought them together on the pitch, if not in the table.
