Sporting Hasselt edge past Dender in narrow victory
Sporting Hasselt secured a 1-0 win over Dender in the opening round of the Challenger Pro League regular season on Friday evening. The result puts the home side on 6 points after four matches, while Dender remain in second place with 9 points. It was a match where the visitors dominated possession but could not find a way through.
The decisive moment came early, when S. Van Keymolen struck in the seventh minute. And here's the thing about such goals — they shift the entire character of a game. Dender pushed forward after that, looking for an equaliser, but Sporting held their shape and made life difficult for the away side.
By then, the pattern was clear enough. Dender had the ball more, but Sporting were content to defend and hit on the break. There was a substitution for P. Gomes at 26 minutes, and M. Bounou picked up a yellow card at 35. The visitors tried to cut them open at will, but the home defence stayed compact.
The second half brought a wave of changes. Sporting made three substitutions at the 61-minute mark — T. Dierckx, P. Kestens and E. Mballa Amougou all came on together. A. Labie picked up a yellow card at 62, and then S. Van Keymolen was substituted at 70, having already done his work. More changes followed at 83 and 88, with N. Gerits, L. Milts and A. Daali all entering the fray, while M. Sambu and A. Lufira collected yellow cards at 84 and 89.
To be fair, the statistics tell you most of what happened. Dender controlled 64 percent of possession and completed 102 attacks compared to 77 for the hosts. They had 8 shots on target and 14 off, but could only hit 32 percent accuracy. Sporting managed 6 shots on target with 43 percent accuracy and converted one.
The result means Sporting stay in ninth place with 6 points from four games, while Dender remain second with 9 points. The visitors had looked vulnerable in recent outings, losing 0-5 and 0-3 in their last two matches. This was a point that could prove valuable for the home side.
