Match report

Thailand beat Myanmar 2:0 in the fifth match of the AFF Championship group stage on Friday in Bangkok. The hosts took an early lead through a penalty and sealed the result with a second spot-kick before half-time. Myanmar dominated possession but found no answer to Thailand's clinical finishing.

W. Kanitsribampen converted the opening penalty in the eleventh minute to give Thailand the advantage. The goal came early and shifted the momentum, even though Myanmar controlled 54 per cent of possession. By then the visitors had already launched 105 attacks compared to the hosts' 70.

And here's the thing about the second goal: it fell in the fifty-second minute, just one minute after J. Andersen picked up a booking. J. Mamah stepped up to fire home from the spot, extending Thailand's lead. The visitors' K. Oo also went into the referee's notebook in the fifty-fourth minute, and Aung Shine Wanna received a card in stoppage time.

Myanmar dallied on the ball without finding a way through. They attempted 38 crosses but only five found their target, while Thailand's two successful crosses from six attempts proved decisive. The hosts created two big chances as well, but it was their 50 per cent shot accuracy that separated them from the visitors' paltry 20 per cent.

Substitutions began in the fifty-ninth minute when Aung Wai Lin came on for the visitors. Thailand responded in the sixty-second with P. Hemviboon, and N. Weerawatnodom followed in the seventy-third. The final changes at both ends came in the eighty-ninth minute as C. Saelao and N. T. Win entered the fray.

The statistics tell a familiar story: many attacks with few rewards. Myanmar registered 105 attacks and 391 passes, yet managed only two shots on target from five attempts inside the penalty area. Thailand, with fewer attacks, converted their opportunities with precision.

The result extends Thailand's unbeaten run, which includes victories over Philippines and Malaysia in recent fixtures. Myanmar's form has dipped, with losses against Malaysia, Vietnam and Philippines in their last five matches. The two points put pressure on the visitors in the group standings.
