Viborg secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Aarhus GF in the Superliga's third round of the regular season on Thursday evening. The result moves the hosts further clear of trouble while leaving their visitors rooted in the lower half of the table. M. Sondergaard's two goals proved decisive despite Aarhus controlling large stretches of possession.
Sondergaard opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, giving Viborg an early advantage that held until F. Emmery levelled for the visitors thirty-one minutes in. Aarhus dominated possession at 66 per cent and created more chances, but the hosts stayed compact and waited for their moment. By then the home side had already established a pattern of frustration for their opponents.
The turning point came at the hour mark when Sondergaard restored Viborg's lead after Aarhus had pressed hard for an equaliser. The visitors responded with several substitutions, bringing on M. Solbakken and T. Molgaard among others in the sixty-first minute. Viborg also changed personnel at that stage, introducing T. Jorgensen and S. Jalal to shore up the defence.
Statistics tell only part of the story. Aarhus registered eleven shots to Viborg's eight, with seven on target compared to three for the hosts. Yet the visitors could not find the net again despite creating two big chances each. Viborg's goalkeeper made six saves while his counterpart managed just one, suggesting the home side faced more pressure than the scoreboard indicates.
The victory lifts Viborg to fourth place with thirteen points from seven games, a solid position after mixed results recently. Aarhus remain in eleventh with only four points, having drawn four and lost three in their opening seven fixtures. The gap between the teams now feels wider than the one-goal margin suggests.
