About the player
Guilherme Madruga earned his moment in the global spotlight with a single strike. On 27 June 2023, playing for Botafogo-SP in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, he scored a bicycle kick against Novorizontino that settled the match 1–0 — and went on to win the 2023 FIFA Puskás Award.
Madruga, born in Campo Grande, worked his way up through a string of youth sides — São Gabriel-MS, Alto Rendimento, Ipatinga and José Bonifácio — before joining Desportivo Brasil, where he made his senior debut in 2019. A loan to Catanduva followed in 2021, after which he returned to Desportivo Brasil. In November 2022 he moved on loan to Botafogo-SP, and the following October the club exercised a buyout clause to take 60% of his economic rights.
His performances at Botafogo-SP, capped by the Puskás-winning goal, opened the door to a move to Cuiabá in January 2024. There he made 25 appearances and scored one goal, and was part of the squad that won the 2024 Campeonato Mato-Grossense.
In January 2025, Cuiabá sold Madruga to Shandong Taishan for a fee of around $800,000. Reports on the length of his contract have varied. He has not yet been capped by the Brazil senior national team.
