About the player
Niklas Hauptmann came up through Dynamo Dresden's own academy. He joined SC Borea Dresden as a boy before moving into Dynamo's youth setup in 2008, worked his way through the reserve side in the NOFV-Oberliga Süd, and made his senior debut in the 3. Liga in the 2015/16 season. Two years later he was a regular part of the side that won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, appearing 29 times and scoring twice.
That form took him to 1. FC Köln in May 2018, for a fee of €3.4 million — double his release clause and, at the time, the highest sum Dynamo Dresden had ever received for a player. A loan to Holstein Kiel in January 2021 gave him a fuller season, 31 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga as the club reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal.
He returned to Dynamo Dresden on a free transfer in August 2022. His goal contributions rose season on season — two in 21 appearances in his first year back, then seven in 38, then six in 37 as Dynamo won the 3. Liga title again in 2025 and returned to the 2. Bundesliga. Between his two spells in Dresden, he had already won a 3. Liga title in 2016 and a 2. Bundesliga title with Köln in 2019.
