On 22 February 2011, AZ shut its women's team down. The reason given was money. Most of the squad moved on to Telstar.

The women's league in the Netherlands opened in 2007 with AZ among its founding members, and the club took the first championship in 2007–08, then the next, then the one after that. The KNVB beker came in 2010–11, the last full season the team played before the announcement.

In January 2022 AZ said it was looking at reviving the women's side; the following month it put financial backing behind VV Alkmaar, and in 2023–24 the club took that team's place in the Eredivisie Vrouwen and played under its own name again. Mark de Vries was appointed head coach on 23 March 2023, before the first match under the restored badge.

Home is the AFAS Training Complex at Wijdewormer, shared with the reserve sides and holding 200. Red, white and black are the colours. The nickname, Cheese farmers , belongs to Alkmaar itself.
