Chicago's northern suburbs are thick with club soccer academies. Chicago FC United grew out of that world in 2003, built not as a professional side but as an elite youth program for boys and girls in the area. In 2016 the club absorbed Trevians Soccer Club and Chicago Magic.

The step toward senior soccer came in 2017, when FC United fielded a semi-professional team in USL League Two, taking the spot left by Chicago Fire Premier's departure from the league. The side won the Central Conference title in 2018 and added a Heartland Division championship in 2022.

Ownership passed to 3Step Sports in 2022, taking over from SMP Holdings under Chad Gruen.
