Étoile du Sahel

Habib Mougou played for Étoile du Sahel, and by the time he stopped playing he had scored 156 goals in 421 appearances for the club.

The club was registered on 12 May 1925 by Chedly Boujemla and a group of founders, who named it for the wider Sahel coast rather than Sousse itself, and the French protectorate administration recognised it that July. The name survived even 1961, when the national authorities dissolved the club outright after crowd violence followed a cup tie against Espérance de Tunis. Étoile was re-established and carried on.

Its best week came in Cairo. In 2007 Étoile beat Al Ahly 3-1 in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final, having held them to a goalless draw at home. The run carried them to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, where they beat Pachuca in the quarter-finals and reached the semi-finals, a feat only one other African club had managed before them.

Sousse Olympic Stadium, built for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and expanded again for 2004, now holds 50,000 after renovations finished in 2024. Domestically, that Cairo run sits alongside eleven Tunisian league titles won since 1950.
