Murata

Murata competes in the Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio, the top flight of San Marino football, in a league still built around the Derby di Montegiardino against San Marino Academy and SP La Fiorita.

The club grew out of the curazia of Murata, the small settlement inside the City of San Marino, and took the field for the first time in 1966. It plays in black and white, a switch from the original yellow and blue made out of admiration for Juventus.

Murata's name is tied above all to one stretch of seasons: three straight league titles, from 2005–06 through 2007–08. That treble came with a Coppa Titano win in each of the last two of those years, adding to one already taken in 1997, and it opened the door to Europe. The 2007–08 championship sent Murata into Champions League qualifying, where Tampere United beat them 1–4 over two legs. Ahead of that tie, the club brought in Aldair, the former Brazil World Cup winner, at 41, and later turned to Massimo Agostini, once a Serie A forward, first as a player and then as manager. Approaches to Romário and, more improbably, to Michael Schumacher went nowhere.

Home games are played at the Stadio Fonte dell'Ovo, which holds around 600, though the trip to Tampere and other fixtures needing UEFA-standard facilities were shifted to the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle.

Since that title run ended, Murata has not found a way back to continental football.
