The habit of winning was set early: in the Soviet years the club never took the USSR title or cup, but it reached the semi-finals of the Soviet Cup four times between 1967 and 1971 and finished third in the 1966 championship.
The club started out in 1937 as Neftyanik and became Neftchi in 1968. It plays in black and white at the Neftçi Arena, known to sponsors as the Bakcell Arena, which holds 11,000.
Its fiercest matches are against Qarabağ, a fixture billed locally as Azerbaijan's own El Clásico.
Tofiq Bəhramov is the name the club is proudest to have produced, though not for what he did on the pitch.
