Rostov FC U19

Rostov-on-Don sits at the edge of the North Caucasus, and its football club has run under four names before settling on the one it carries now: Selmashstroy, then Selmash, Traktor, Torpedo, and from 1958 Rostselmash, after the harvester plant that fielded the works team. The U19 side is not a company of its own — it operates inside JSC FC Rostov, and its academy dates to 20 February 2002, decades after the senior club's founding on 10 May 1930.

Where the first team plays at Rostov Arena, built for 45,000, the U19s play at Lokomotiv Stadium on Stachki Avenue, a ground that holds 3,000 by one count and as few as 1,500 by another — either way, a fraction of the arena across town. The yellow and blue that give the club its nickname, Yellow-blues, are the same colours as the senior side, and the older nicknames tied to the Rostselmash plant, Combines and Selmashi, still surface among people who remember the club by its factory name.

The academy side has not troubled the top of its table. Across the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons it finished seventh in Russia's top junior division both times, without ever reaching the honours the first team has collected — a Russian Cup in 2013/14 and a runner-up finish in the league in 2015/16 remain achievements of the senior side, not the youth one.

The name people reach for regardless is Artem Dzyuba, whose loan spell at Rostov is remembered as the making of him as a striker. It is worth being precise about it: he came up through Spartak and the Football Business academy, not this one. Rostov gave him a stage, not an upbringing.
