Servette FC

The 1978–79 season stands apart from the rest: under coach Umberto Barberis, Servette FC took the Swiss championship, the Swiss Cup, the League Cup and the Alpine Cup in the same campaign, the only Swiss club to have swept every competition it entered in one year. The league title alone came 17 times across nearly a century, from 1907 through 1999, with a first stretch of dominance built in the 1920s and 1930s under Teddy Duckworth and then Karl Rappan, who brought the verrou system to a Geneva side that had no equal at the time. The Swiss Cup followed eight times, most recently in 2024, more than four decades after the previous one in 1984.

No one wore the shirt longer or scored more for the club than Jacques Fatton, whose totals of 440 appearances and 274 goals still stand. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spent two seasons in Geneva from 1987, scoring 24 goals in 1988/89 before moving on, a brief but pointed chapter for a club more used to producing its own names than importing famous ones.

Money troubles have shadowed the trophies. A second bankruptcy hit in 2012, and the club was bought out of it by a consortium led by Hugh Quennec; by 2015 control had passed to the Fondation 1890, which gave the operation the stability it had lacked. Servette dropped as far as the second tier and worked its way back, winning the Challenge League in 2019 to return to the Super League. On derby weekends the fixture that matters most is against FC Sion, the Derby du Rhône, with FC Lausanne-Sport supplying the other rivalry, known locally as the Derby du Lac.

The club's roots are in rugby, not football: a rugby side founded on 20 March 1890, with a football section only added on 17 January 1900, after François de Gérine had already put together a "Sunday team" the year before.
