Shan United

Taunggyi Stadium holds a modest 7,000, but for Shan United it carries a specific weight: the ground sits in the Shan State capital the club adopted as its own only after 2015, when a side previously run out of Yangon repainted itself in the yellow and red of the regional flag and took the name it plays under now. Before that it had spent over a decade as Kanbawza Football Club, set up in 2003 and named for the bank that owned it, one of the founding members when the Myanmar National League replaced the old Myanmar Premier League in 2009.

The move to Taunggyi did nothing to slow the club down. Shan United has become the dominant force in Myanmar football, taking the national league title seven times, most recently closing out the 2025–26 campaign on a 22-match unbeaten run in which they scored 66 goals and let in only ten. The 2022 season stands apart even by their own standard: they went through the entire league schedule without losing a match. The domestic double of 2017, when they paired the league title with the General Aung San Shield after beating Yangon United 2-1 in the final, remains the season most often pointed to as proof the club had outgrown its old identity.

That match against Yangon United was no accident of scheduling. With Yadanarbon's standing in the league having faded, the fixture against Yangon United has become the derby that matters most in Myanmar football, and it still carries the sharpest edge of any date on Shan United's calendar. Zin Min Tun, a regular for the national team, has been the player supporters point to up front during this run.

Continental football has been less kind, including a 6-0 defeat to Becamex Binh Duong in the AFC Cup, though a run to the quarter-finals of the 2024–25 AFC Challenge League showed the gap can close. With the domestic title retained again, Shan United's next test is whether that same squad can carry the unbeaten form into Asian competition.
