Temperley grew up around a railway junction on the southern edge of Buenos Aires, in the partido of Lomas de Zamora, and the club took its name straight from the town. A group of neighbours had already tried once, forming Club de Foot-ball Centenario in 1910, before the meeting at Club Arias on 1 November 1912 produced the version that lasted. It joined the Argentine Football Association in 1917 and adopted the light blue shirt that still identifies it; the name settled as Club Atlético Temperley in 1921, after a brief spell in the 1930s playing as Argentino de Temperley following a merger with a Banfield club.

The club spent 37 years working through the divisions before reaching the top flight in 1974, champions of Primera B under Jorge Ginarte. The second promotion, in 1982, came the harder way: beaten by San Lorenzo in the final, Temperley then had to see off Atlanta in a penalty shootout that finished 13-12. Neither stay lasted. Relegation came in 1987, a second drop followed in 1989, and by 1991 unpaid wages had left the club roughly $400,000 in debt to the players' union. AFA shut it down for two years; when it reopened in 1993, Temperley had to start again in Primera C, which it won in 1994-95 on the way to a rapid double promotion back to the second tier.

The Estadio Alfredo Martín Beranger, known locally as El Teatro de Turdera, has held 18,000 since concrete stands went up in 1946. More recent honours followed: the Primera B Nacional title in 2014, and the Copa Schneider in 2018, beaten Racing Club 1-0 in the final. The 1974 championship, though, remains the only one Gasolero has won at the top level — it has not been back to the Primera División since the 1987 relegation.
