U.N.A.M. - Pumas

Pumas UNAM have won the Mexican league seven times, most recently in 2011, and the first of those took patience. Universidad Nacional reached the Primera División in 1962 and has never gone back down since, but the breakthrough title only arrived in the 1976-77 season. Continental success followed within a few years: three CONCACAF Champions Cups between 1980 and 1989, with a Copa Interamericana won along the way.

The name predates the trophies. In 1942, a coach named Roberto Méndez, known as "Tapatío", called the university's teams Pumas, and it spread to every sport UNAM played, not just football. Blue and gold followed, and supporters still use "Auriazules" as a second name for the same colours.

Derby weekends in Mexico City run through this club. Against Club América it is the Clásico Capitalino, a rivalry that hardened in the 1980s; against Cruz Azul it is the Clásico de la Obsesión.

The academy has carried real weight over the years. Hugo Sánchez and Jorge Campos both came through it before building careers well beyond Mexico, and Claudio Suárez and Héctor Moreno followed the same path out of the university's own youth ranks.

Home is the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, built into the UNAM campus in Mexico City — the students' ground first, and the club's ever since.
