Lugano II — Basel II: 3:0, 1. Liga Promotion

Lugano II and Basel II met in the First League promotion competition on Sunday, and the hosts put a comprehensive 3-0 victory on the board. The result keeps both sides level on points in the table, though Lugano sit 13th while Basel occupy 11th after seven games each.

Two early goals did the damage. G. Ajdin opened the scoring in the fifth minute and doubled the advantage by the 13th, leaving Basel to chase shadows for much of the match. R. Frizzi added a third in the 66th minute to see out the win.

We had Basel winning this one, with 51 per cent confidence. And here's the thing — the early goals changed everything. When a side concedes twice in ten minutes, the game goes quiet. Basel were caught in possession and never really found their rhythm.

Both teams come into this having won three and lost four, so the margin between them is narrow. To be fair, the result reflects what we've seen all season: three or four moments decide a match, and the rest is background noise.

After seven rounds both sides sit on nine points. Lugano have dropped to 13th, Basel to 11th. The gap between them remains the same, but the momentum has shifted.

A clean sheet and three goals is a solid return for Lugano. By then Basel had already pulled back on their late surge, and this result means they'll need to regroup quickly if they want to climb away from the bottom half.
