Ashanti Gold

Ashanti Gold began as a works team, formed in 1978 by employees of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation and known for years as Goldfields Sporting Club. The name changed to Ashanti Gold Sporting Club on 16 April 2004, when the company restructured its ownership of the side, and neither did the nickname it earned there: The Miners.

The league titles won as Goldfields, in 1993–94, 1994–95 and 1995–96, came before the rebrand; the fourth, in 2015, came after it.

Charles Akonnor left Obuasi to play in the Bundesliga, for Hertha BSC and Borussia Mönchengladbach, and later returned to manage the club he had once played for. Mubarak Wakaso took the same road out, via Elche to Villarreal, Espanyol and Celtic.

None of that history was enough to spare the club a fall: relegation to the Division Two League in May 2022, ordered by the Ghana Football Association over match manipulation in a 2021 fixture against Inter Allies. The Ashanti Derby against Asante Kotoko remains the fixture that matters most in Obuasi, regardless of which division either side is playing in.
