Italian immigrants in the Melbourne suburb of Keilor set up the club, registering it as Keilor I.C.K.A. in 1984. A second shift followed in 2015: the club settled at Avenger Park in Parkville, took the name Avondale FC and adopted the nickname "The Avengers," which still suits a ground that holds 2,500.

The Dockerty Cup arrived in 2021, when Stefan Valentini's goal beat Hume City 1-0 in the final. Jonatan Germano top-scored for Avondale before moving into the coaching staff. The NPL Victoria 1 Championship followed in 2014, the Victorian State League 3 NW title in 2012, building toward the club's most complete season: the 2023 Premiership and Grand Final double.

Heidelberg United is the opponent that matters most when the season is on the line: the two clubs met in the Grand Final in 2018 and again in 2023. The Premiership was still enough to send Avondale into the Australian Championship as a foundation club.
