Oakleigh Cannons trace back to members of Melbourne's Greek community who put together a side in the south-eastern suburb of Oakleigh. They founded it in December 1972 as South Oakleigh Soccer Club. The name changed to Oakleigh Cannons in the 1990s.

The breakthrough came the following year, when Oakleigh beat South Melbourne 5-0 to be crowned NPL Victoria champions, then added the Dockerty Cup in 2023. In 2024 they beat South Melbourne again in the title decider, this time 1-0.

That rivalry with South Melbourne runs alongside another, older one: matches against Heidelberg United are known locally as the Greek Derby. Bentleigh Greens complete a trio of clubs Oakleigh measure themselves against most keenly.
