The Northern Derby against Preston Lions, and the rougher edges of matches with Heidelberg United, sit closer to the club's identity than any table position — Broadmeadows football has always measured itself against the clubs across the northern suburbs, and Moreland City and Melbourne Srbija fill in the rest of a local rivalry map that predates most of Hume City's own name changes.

The club started in 1979 as Holland Park Football Club, set up by members of the local Turkish-Australian community — Cengiz Binyazar, Halit Kirdar and Abdullah Saglam among them — which is why the nickname Anadoluspor, "Anatolians," still attaches to a side that has worn red and black since. It became North Coburg Soccer Club in 1993, then Coburg United in 2006, before the move to Broadmeadows in 2009 brought the current name.

Promotions in 1996, 1999 and 2002 carried the club up through the Victorian state league system, and it reached the Victorian Premier League in 2007. Survival that first season in the top flight came down to a late goal from Tansel Başer, the kind of result that decides whether a newly promoted club gets a second season in company like that at all. Hume City has stayed in that company since, and in 2019 won the Dockerty Cup, beating Melbourne Knights 1–0.

The ground now called Nasiol Stadium, formerly the ABD Stadium, holds 3,000 people, 580 of them seated, and got new facilities in 2014 after a $12 million rebuild on the same Broadmeadows site.

Ersan Gülüm played for the club, later chaired it, and represented Turkey at international level — a rare combination of playing career, boardroom role and national-team pedigree inside one suburban side, and the name Broadmeadows supporters bring up first when the club's history comes up.
