Caersws grew out of the same amateur impulse that founded most Mid Wales clubs in the late 19th century, men gathering to organise a fixture list around a village too small to need much more than a pitch and a name. That happened in 1887, when the side took the field as Caersws Amateurs. What followed was a century of regional dominance rather than national fame: nine Mid Wales League titles between 1959–60 and 1996–97, and 31 wins in the Montgomeryshire Cup, a record no neighbouring club has matched.

The step up came in 1992, when Caersws won the Cymru Alliance and stood among the founding members of the League of Wales, the competition now known as the Cymru Premier. Three FAW Premier Cup wins followed, in 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2006–07, and the club returned to regional football to win the Ardal North East in 2022–23.

Two names carry more weight than the rest at the club. Phil Woosnam played for West Ham and Manchester City before going on to shape professional soccer administration in the United States, a career arc rare for anyone who started out in Mid Wales football. Chris Venables built his reputation closer to home, topping the Cymru Premier scoring charts five times and becoming one of the division's most decorated players while wearing Caersws blue.

Home games are played at the Recreation Ground, which holds 4,000, with 500 seats among them. The fiercest fixture on the calendar is against Newtown AFC, a few miles down the road, known locally as the Mid Wales derby or the Powys derby. The club still plays in blue and white, the colours behind the Bluebirds nickname, on the same ground where the Amateurs first took shape in 1887.
