Friends gathering on a street corner in Retiro started it in 1908, calling their club Libertarios Unidos after the road they met on and the anarchist and socialist leanings they shared. Red and black were the first colours.

Colegiales carries that combination now from Florida Oeste, in Vicente López, at the Estadio Libertarios Unidos — a name that still points back to the street corner in Retiro.

Two names from the 1920s stand out from the rest. Américo Tesoriere arrived from Boca Juniors in 1921, when the club was still Sportivo del Norte, and went on to win the Copa América with Argentina in both 1921 and 1925.

RSSSF credits the club with three Primera C titles, in 1992/93, 2002/03 and 2007/08, and two in Primera B, in 1928 and in 2024 — the second one arriving under current coach Leonardo Fernández, who took the side up to Primera Nacional that year.

On matchdays the fixture that matters most is against San Miguel, one of the sharper derbies in the northern reaches of Greater Buenos Aires, with Excursionistas treated as a rival of similar weight in the lower divisions. Diego Maradona is counted among the club's known supporters, without ever having worn the shirt.

The club still belongs to its members, roughly 3,000 of them.
