In 1912, barely a year after its founding, a faction led by Miguel Ortiz de Zárate walked out and set up a rival outfit, Liberal Argentino, just streets away in the same Buenos Aires neighbourhood.

The club itself had been born of a merger rather than a single foundation: three local sides, Jubile, San Martín Juniors and Lezica, came together on 6 January 1911, the Day of the Kings, in the barrio of Almagro.

Silverware has mostly come in the lower divisions, but 1968 stands apart — the Primera B Metropolitana title that finally sent Almagro up to the Primera División. Getting back among the elite has proved harder than reaching it that once: the club has instead built a habit of winning its way out of the second tier through promotion play-offs, beating Instituto de Córdoba in 1999/2000 and Huracán de Tres Arroyos in 2003/2004.

Almagro plays its home matches at Estadio Tres de Febrero, known locally as Estadio Almagro, which holds 19,000 people — a ground sized for a club that has spent most of its history fighting its way up from the divisions below, rather than defending a place among Argentina's biggest names.
