On 14 October 2022, Patronato went down from the Primera División. On 30 October, the squad beat Talleres 1-0 in the final of the Copa Argentina, Tiago Banega scoring in the 78th minute. It gave the club its first national title, and made it the first side from Entre Ríos province ever to win one — one of only six Argentine clubs outside the Buenos Aires and Santa Fe heartland to manage it.
The club traces back to a priest, Padre Bartolomé Grella, who founded it in Paraná on 1 February 1914 to give local children religious instruction alongside football. For the first six years Patronato played in blue. In 1920 the colours changed to red and black, a nod to a team from Piedmont, the region in Italy Grella had come from.
The Copa Argentina run opened the door to South America. In 2023 Patronato played its first-ever continental fixture, in the Copa Libertadores, and beat Melgar of Peru 4-1.
