In 1986, having just been promoted to Argentina's second division, Deportivo Maipú found itself unable to cover the season's travel and kit costs. Supporters began collecting glass bottles around the city and selling them for scrap to keep the club running, a fundraising effort so central to that year that the team has carried the nickname El Botellero ever since.

The club was founded on 16 December 1927, after a year of informal existence, and it has never changed its name, unlike some of its Mendoza neighbours such as San Martín de Maipú. It still plays at the Estadio Omar Higinio Sperdutti, known locally as El Abrazo de Maipú. The home shirt carries a white cross on red, a design drawn from the city's coat of arms and the source of the club's other nickname, Cruzado.

Its highest honour came in 2020, when it beat Deportivo Madryn 2-0 in the Torneo Federal A final to reach the Primera Nacional, Argentina's second tier. Twelve years earlier it had already won the fourth-tier Torneo Argentino B on penalties against Alvarado. In the Copa Argentina, its one night to remember came in 2017-18, a 3-0 win over Chacarita Juniors.

Rubens Sambueza, who came through River Plate's academy and later played in Mexico for Toluca and América, closed out his career at the club across the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Deportivo Maipú has never played a match in the Primera División. The closest it came was in 2024, when it lost the promotion play-off final to Deportivo Riestra.
