Long before Famalicão became a Primeira Liga fixture, the club came out in green and white when six friends founded it on 21 August 1931.

The ground moved twice more before it settled: from Campo da Berbéria to Campo do Freião, and in 1952 to the Estádio Municipal 22 de Junho, which still holds the club's home games and seats 5,307.

Famalicão spent the 2000s sliding the wrong way, down to the district league of Braga, the fifth tier, in 2008–09. The climb back took the best part of a decade: promotion to the Segunda Divisão came in May 2015, the first time back in nineteen years, and on 28 April 2019 the club reached the Primeira Liga for the first time in twenty-five years. Ownership changed alongside the results — Quantum Pacific Group, controlled by the Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer, bought 51% of the club in 2018 and raised that stake to 85% in September 2019.

The club has reached the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal — 1946, 2020 and 2023 — without going further.
