Twice, Porto have beaten the best clubs in Europe over two legs and a final, and neither victory looked like the other. In Vienna in 1987 they came from a goal down to beat Bayern Munich 2-1. Seventeen years later, in Gelsenkirchen, they took apart Monaco 3-0 in the Champions League final. Between those two nights sit two UEFA Cup wins as well, against Celtic in Seville in 2003 and against fellow Portuguese side Braga in Dublin in 2011.

The club traces back to 1893, when António Nicolau de Almeida, a port wine merchant who had picked up the game in England, put together Foot-Ball Club do Porto. His enthusiasm did not survive family pressure, and the side folded within a few years. It took a second Anglophile, José Monteiro da Costa, to bring it back in 1906; he became president and brought in a French coach, Adolphe Cassaigne, to give the club something closer to a system rather than a habit.

Domestically, that system has produced 31 Primeira Liga titles and 20 Taça de Portugal wins.

Home games since 2003 have been played at the Estádio do Dragão and named, like the club itself, for the dragon on its badge. It holds 50,033.
