Subotica sits at the northern edge of Serbia, in Vojvodina.

The club traces to 21 April 1945, built on the remains of ŽAK Subotica, a side that had existed since 1921. It won the Vojvodina group of the Serbian Republic League in its first season, 1945–46, taking the second division four times — 1952, 1971–72, 1985–86 and 1987–88.

Home games are played at Gradski stadion Subotica, known locally as Spale, in front of a capacity of 13,000. The colours are red and white, though the nickname that has stuck alongside Spartanci is Plavi golubovi — the blue pigeons.

The clearest mark the club has left on Serbian football is a name that passed through it early: Nemanja Vidić started his career at Spartak in 2000–01 before a path that led to the captaincy of Manchester United. Savo Pavićević, formerly a Montenegro international defender, took over as head coach in 2026.

Twice Spartak reached the final of the Yugoslav Cup, in 1961–62 and again in 1993–94.
