About

The Prva Liga functions as the second tier of the Serbian football pyramid, operating directly beneath the SuperLiga and above the Srpska Liga. Established in 2006 following the dissolution of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, it serves as the direct successor to the former second tier of that system. The competition distinguishes itself from the Serbian Cup, which is a knockout tournament offering direct qualification to the UEFA Europa League, whereas the Prva Liga is a league competition focused on promotion to the top flight and does not offer direct European qualification.

The season format has evolved significantly over time. While it historically utilized a double round-robin structure, recent seasons have employed a two-phase model. This involves a preliminary round-robin followed by a split into a promotion/relegation group, sometimes referred to as 'play-off' and 'play-out' rounds, to determine final standings. The league underwent several reforms, including a reduction from 18 to 16 clubs in 2013–14 and temporary expansions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, sponsorship names include 'Mozzart Bet Prva Liga' since 2013–14.

Promotion to the SuperLiga is primarily automatic for the top two finishers. The third-placed team enters a two-legged promotion play-off against the 15th-placed team from the SuperLiga. Relegation sees the bottom teams drop to the Srpska Liga, with the 13th and 14th-placed teams often entering relegation play-offs against winners from the Srpska Liga groups. The most successful clubs in the league's history are Mladost Lučani, Napredak Kruševac, and Radnik Surdulica, each having won the title twice. Radnik Surdulica is the champion of the 2024–25 season. The league's official website is prvaliga.rs.
