Six of the nine Italian titles came before the First World War. The last two, in 1923 and 1924, came almost two decades later.

The name has stayed in English ever since, which is why the club is also known simply as Genova 1893.

Red and blue only arrived in 1901. Before that the team played in white, and in white and light blue; the switch gave the club the name it still carries in the city, I Rossoblù . The griffin is older than all of it. The creature had been on the city's coat of arms since 1580, and when the club was formed its founders took it as the badge — Il Grifone is what the team is called when the crest matters more than the colours.
