Holbaek

Six-year-olds walking into a gym hall in a small Zealand town rarely turn into national team players, but Holbæk Basketball Klub has managed it more than once since 1971. Andreas Jakobsen started there at that age, worked his way up through the club and eventually earned 25 caps for Denmark before leaving for Bakken Bears — a path the club still points to when it talks about what its youth work is for.

That youth work runs through an arrangement most Danish clubs its size do not have. In the early 2000s, Stenhus Gymnasium in Holbæk set up a basketball college to develop elite teenage talent, and HBK built its senior programme around that pipeline rather than beside it. The senior men's team now plays under the joint name Holbæk-Stenhus, training and playing out of Stenhus Gymnasium's hall.

The club had a first spell at the top before this one. Its elite side competed in the Basketligaen from the 2002/2003 season as Team Sjælland, with Jakobsen among its players, before dropping back down. It took until 2022/2023, after promotion from the 1. Division, for Holbæk-Stenhus to return to the top flight — more than fifteen years after that side last played there.

The academy keeps producing names beyond Jakobsen. Magnus Darling came through the Stenhus college as a Danish under-16 talent before moving abroad to Real Betis in 2023, evidence the pathway extends past the club's own gym doors. Julius Edelved was part of the squad that took the club back into the Basketligaen.

What HBK has not managed, across more than fifty years and two spells in Denmark's top division, is a national title. No Basketligaen championship and no Danmarkspokalen sit in the club's history yet.
