Vaerlose BBK

Bankruptcy is not a word that usually sits in a trophy cabinet, but Værløse BBK's is bracketed by two. In the 2002–03 season the club, merged with local rivals as BF Copenhagen, won the Basketligaen and the Danish Cup double. On 7 October 2003 the merged entity filed for bankruptcy after its director had embezzled funds, and the joint venture that had just topped Danish basketball ceased to exist within months of doing so.

That collapse closed a run that had opened at Søndersøhallen in Værløse, where the club had played since 1972. The championship pattern repeats through three different names in eight years: Værløse BBK took the title in 1995–96, the Værløse/Farum merger with Farum Basketball took it in 2001–02, and BF Copenhagen in 2002–03. Two Danish Cups, in 1990 and 2001, were won under the Værløse name outright, before the third came with the doomed 2003 side.

Søndersøhallen holds 750, modest enough that the men's team, branded the Værløse Blue Hawks since the 2019–20 season, moves to Farum Arena and its roughly 3,000 seats when television turns up. The rivalry with BMS Herlev, now Herlev Wolfpack, is old enough that the Danish league calls the fixture simply "the eternal rivals," without ever settling on a proper name for it.

What survived the 2003 bankruptcy was the pipeline that had fed it. The club has kept producing Danish talent rather than importing it, a habit that runs from Otis Loyd, player-coach across two spells either side of the championship years, through Jimmy Moore's part in the 2001–02 title, to Adam Heede-Andersen, a graduate of the academy now established in the Danish national team.
