Ljungskile sits in Uddevalla Municipality, in Västra Götaland, and the club that carries its name climbed from Division 5 — the sixth tier — to the Allsvenskan across seven seasons between 1990 and 1997. The decisive night was in November 1996, away to Umeå FC: 0–1 down from the first leg, 3–2 on the day.

The top flight lasted one year. In 1997 the club finished fourteenth and last with 20 points and went back down. Bosse Wålemark scored the first Allsvenskan goal in the club's history, in a 2–1 home win over IFK Norrköping; the family name kept recurring, and Jörgen Wålemark later returned as manager.

Kenny Pavey spent seven seasons here from 1998 before going on to win the league and cup double with AIK. Ken Sema passed through on loan in 2014, on his way to Östersund, Watford and 26 caps for Sweden.

The honours are third-tier ones — Division 2 Västra Götaland in 2001 and 2004 — plus the near miss of 2007, second in Superettan and a promotion place unclaimed. Skarsjövallen holds 6,000 and can be extended to 8,000. The visit that fills it is IK Oddevold from Uddevalla, for the Bohus derby.
