Norrby IF spent a single season in the top flight of Swedish football, and it happened in 1956, the year after the club won Division 2 and earned promotion. Eleventh place in Allsvenskan was the return, and NIF has not been back since — a whole club's history in the elite compressed into one campaign.

The club traces back to 27 April 1927, when a group of young men in the Norrbygärde district of Borås formed a team called Kronängskamraterna. A naming clash with another club forced a change to Norrbygärde in 1934, and the name Norrby IF was restored in 1948.

That one Allsvenskan season produced players who went further than the club itself. Reino Börjesson won 10 caps for Sweden and played at the 1958 World Cup; Henry Källgren was part of the same World Cup squad. Two decades later Gunnar Gren took charge of Norrby as manager in 1979.

Borås Arena, the club's home ground, holds 14,500. Norrby never featured in European competition. Away from football, the club's table tennis section won the Swedish championship three times running, in 1960, 1961 and 1962, though that stands as a separate chapter from the men's team's history.
