Ella Toone grew up going through the club's own academy, and she is now the leading scorer in its history.

Manchester United Women had lost the previous season's final to Chelsea, and this time they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4–0 to take the trophy. It came six years after the club had come back into existence at all — the current team was formed in May 2018, filling a gap left by Manchester United Ladies, which had run from 1977 until it was disbanded in 2005. Winning the FA Women's Championship in that first season back sent them straight into the WSL.

Mary Earps kept goal through much of that period, from 2019 to 2024, and Maya Le Tissier now captains a squad built as much on its own graduates — Toone among them, alongside Katie Zelem and Millie Turner — as on signings like Alessia Russo and Nikita Parris.

They train and play out of Leigh Sports Village, a 12,000-capacity ground some way from Old Trafford, where the men's team is based and where the women's side turns out only occasionally. The fixture that matters most is against Manchester City Women, the Manchester Derby, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool as the other clubs they are judged against.

The league title itself has not come.
