Promotion through the NB I/B in 2017–18 put the club back among the elite, and a third-place finish in the NB I in 2020–21 showed that result was no fluke. The same season carried the club into the EHF European League, where it reached the quarter-finals before losing to JDA Bourgogne Dijon Handball, and it returned to the group stage in 2024–25.

Ferenc Stanigg took over as head coach in 2025, following János Gyurka, at a time when the club has had to manage financial and licensing pressure that has put it among the sides watching the table from below in 2025–26 rather than looking up it.

None of that has dented the fixture that matters most in the region. Győri Audi ETO KC sits barely down the road in the same county, and a meeting between the two draws on more than league points — it is a derby settled by geography as much as by handball, with Ferencvárosi TC standing as the other name Óvár's supporters mark on the calendar.
