International qualifying windows now set the calendar for the Philippines, and the squad has made the ASEAN Championship semi-finals five times over, most recently in 2024, without yet breaking through to a final. Carles Cuadrat now oversees a group that plays its major qualifiers at New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Tarlac.

The team traces its history to a 2–1 win over China on 4 February 1913, at the first Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila, a tournament the Philippines went on to win that year. The federation behind the side, founded in 1907 as the Philippine Amateur Football Association, later joined FIFA in 1930 and became a founding member of the Asian Football Confederation in 1954.

That changed in 2010, when Simon McMenemy took charge of what supporters came to call the Era of Renaissance, a breakthrough built partly around Phil Younghusband, who would finish his international career in 2019 as both the all-time top scorer and the most-capped player in the team's history. Thomas Dooley later secured qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup; the run ended in the group stage.

Home matches in Manila are played at Rizal Memorial Stadium, which holds just under 13,000. The nickname Azkals, from the Tagalog for street dog, was adopted in 2010. Runner-up and third-place finishes at the AFC Challenge Cup, in 2014 and 2012, sit among the closest the side has come to continental silverware since 1913.
