Carlos Peucelle spent two seasons at San Telmo, 1925 and 1926, before River Plate paid a record fee for him and turned him into part of La Máquina. He played the 1930 World Cup final for Argentina.

Financial trouble shut it down in 1933; it came back on 17 October 1942 and has been Club Atlético San Telmo, the name it settled on in 1923, ever since.

The one season people at the club still bring up is 1975. San Telmo finished third in Primera B, went through the promotion play-off, and reached the Primera División for the first time in its history. Pedro Coronel led the line the following year with 13 goals, with Osvaldo Regueira alongside him, but staying up proved harder than getting there.

Since then the club has made a habit of getting close and falling short: a Copa Argentina run stopped in the quarter-finals in 2020/21 by Argentinos Juniors, a promotion final lost to All Boys that same season, and further play-off defeats to Tristán Suárez in both 2021 and 2024. Four Primera C titles sit in the record book instead — 1949, 1956, 1961 and 2015 — though only the last three carried automatic promotion.
