The national side traces back to the winter of 1919; two years later, on 18 December 1921, the team took the field for the first time, against Hungary. Membership of FIFA followed in 1923, of UEFA in 1955.
Nothing that came after matched the run under Kazimierz Górski in the first half of the 1970s. His side took Olympic gold in 1972 and finished third at the 1974 World Cup, with Grzegorz Lato top-scoring in West Germany to claim the Golden Boot. Poland added an Olympic silver in 1976, then repeated the World Cup bronze in 1982, before the results thinned out through the late 1980s and into the 1990s.
Warsaw's Kazimierz Górski National Stadium, holding 58,580, has hosted the team through the leaner years as much as the good ones.
