The ASEAN Basketball League was a professional men's competition in Southeast Asia. It sat above domestic leagues in regional prestige but lacked the tiered promotion and relegation structure typical of European football. The league operated as an invitational tournament where teams joined based on agreements with organizers and local federations.
The competition was a joint initiative of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association and the Tune Group, which also owned and funded the venture. It was the premier professional club competition in the region. The format varied by season, with some campaigns splitting teams into groups while others used a double round-robin structure. Playoffs typically consisted of best-of-3 semi-finals and finals.
The league was distinct from domestic leagues like the Philippine Basketball Association due to its regional nature and unique import rules. Until 2018, teams could roster two "World Imports" and two "ASEAN Heritage Imports". This rule aimed to foster regional talent development and national team cohesion. The competition featured between 6 and 10 teams from countries including the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
The most successful teams were Hi-Tech Bangkok City and Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions, each winning two titles. The most recent champions were the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions in the 2023 Invitational. The league folded after the 2023 Invitational, with FIBA withdrawing support in November 2023, citing misalignment with FIBA Asia's future plans. The competition is defunct as of 2024/2025.
