The Philippine Cup stands as the premier conference of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), a league that pioneered professional basketball in Asia since its inception in 1975. Originally termed the All-Filipino Cup, the tournament established its defining characteristic in 1977 by strictly prohibiting foreign imports. This policy ensures that only Filipino players and those of Filipino descent participate, distinguishing it from the other annual conferences which allow imported players under varying height restrictions.
The competition operates within a closed franchise system where teams join through expansion bids rather than promotion. The season begins with a single round-robin elimination round, requiring each of the twelve participating clubs to play 11 games. The top eight teams then progress to the playoffs. The quarterfinals employ a double-elimination bracket featuring a "twice-to-beat" advantage for the top four seeds, while the semifinals and finals are contested as best-of-seven series. No third-place game is played.
The winner of the tournament is presented with the Jun Bernardino Trophy. The San Miguel Beermen hold the record for the most titles in the event's history, with sources citing between 10 and 12 championships. They also maintain the longest consecutive title streak, winning five titles in a row from 2015 to 2019. In the 2025 season, the San Miguel Beermen secured the championship by defeating the TNT Tropang 5G in the finals with a score of 4–2. Other notable clubs in the current lineup include the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Blackwater Bossing, Converge FiberXers, Magnolia Hotshots, Meralco Bolts, and the NLEX Road Warriors.
