«Road Warriors»
Games against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, TNT Tropang Giga, Meralco Bolts and Magnolia Hotshots carry the weight for NLEX Road Warriors, even without a name attached to any of those matchups. There is no single fixture the club is built around; the rivalry is simply whoever stands between them and a result that keeps eluding them.
That result has stayed just out of reach in the PBA. NLEX has never reached a Finals series, and a run to the semifinals of the 2018 Philippine Cup remains the high point since the club joined the league. The gap between that record and what came before is stark: as a PBA D-League side, the franchise won six championships between 2011 and 2014, taking the Foundation Cup and the Aspirant's Cup in the same year, 2014, before Manila North Tollways Corporation folded the operation into the Air21 Express franchise it had acquired that June and moved it up to the PBA proper.
Asi Taulava gave the early NLEX sides a veteran presence carried over from that D-League run.
No arena in Manila or nearby Bulacan belongs to NLEX outright. Home games move between the Ninoy Aquino Stadium, which holds 6,000, and the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, a ground built for crowds many times that size. A team without a fixed address plays in front of whichever crowd the schedule sends it to that week, in a city, Quezon City, that lends its name to the franchise without ever quite housing it.
